Three questions to help you find the right school during National School Choice Week

We’re celebrating National School Choice Week in Colorado! There are more than 500 events across the state from Jan. 21-27 to help families learn about school options for the 2018-19 school year. Whether you’re looking for a traditional district-run school, public charter school, magnet school, online school or even homeschool, you get to choose the best learning environment for your child.

With so many options available, the more you know, the more confidence you’ll have in finding the right fit for your child. Use this week to boost your knowledge and confidence by answering three questions:

  1. What are my school options?
  2. When is my preferred school’s enrollment deadline?
  3. How do I apply?

To get started, check out this snapshot of school choice and enrollment information in Colorado’s three largest districts.

Finding the Right School in Denver

What are my school options?
If you live in Denver and are considering enrollment in Denver Public Schools (DPS), you can learn more about options by visiting schoolchoice.dpsk12.org. Use the district’s online School Finder tool to locate schools near you. You can also browse all of the schools within the district by downloading the SchoolChoice Enrollment Guide.

Once you’ve narrowed your choices, visit a Regional School Choice Expo to meet school leaders, teachers and even other students and parents at the schools you would like to enroll. Find an event near you.

When is the enrollment deadline?
SchoolChoice enrollment forms are due by Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.

How do I apply to my preferred school?
Families who wish to enroll their child in any DPS school should submit a School Choice form online. Forms will be made
available on February 1, 2018.

Finding the Right School in Jefferson County

What are my school options?
While most students in JeffCo Public Schools attend their neighborhood school, the district does offer Choice Enrollment. Families can research schools in JeffCo’s School Directory. This week families can also attend School Interest Nights to learn more about specific school offerings and programs.

When is the enrollment deadline?
Choice Enrollment Applications are due by January 31, 2018.

How do I apply to my preferred school?
Families who wish to enroll their child in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school must submit a Choice Enrollment Application to their preferred school. You can download forms here.

Finding the Right School in Douglas County

What are my school options?
Douglas County’s EmpowerEd Choices School Search Tool makes it easy to find the right school based on location as well as the individual needs of your child.

When is the enrollment deadline?
Round two of open enrollment runs January 22, 2018 and extends through August 1, 2018. Hurry, round two is first come, first serve.

How do I apply to my preferred school?
Use the district’s online enrollment tool to start the process if you did not participate in round one of open enrollment. Families who participated in round one but did not receive their top choice will be placed on a waitlist beginning January 22nd. Schools will reach out to families only when and if a spot becomes available.

This year families interested in enrolling in the following charter schools may use the district’s online enrollment tool to apply: Sky View Academy, Academy Charter School, Renaissance Secondary and Apex Community School.

There are so many options for families to choose! Check back later this week for more information on school options throughout Colorado!
